The OPUS hut has solar powered lighting and 110 volt outlets for charging electronic devices.
We provide full bedding (sheets, pillows and comforters) as well as clean sleeping bag liners to use in the winter. Resource constraints (water and power) don’t allow us to wash sheets between every guest in the winter, but the liners and pillow cases are cleaned after each use. Bedding is changed every couple of weeks.
In the summer months, one can drive to within 1/4 mile of the hut. In the winter (November – April) the road closes and it’s a 3.5 mile skin to the hut on skis.
The hut has filtered drinking water, hot and cold tap water, and indoor composting toilets.
Meals include afternoon soup (served around 4:30), dinner (served at 7:00), and breakfast (served at 7:30) the following morning. OPUS staff can accommodate special dietary needs as well. A-la-carte snacks, trail snacks and appetizers are also available.
Beer, wine and a limited selection of spirits are available from the bar. Cash and credit cards are accepted at the hut. Credit cards are preferred.
A sunny, cozy lodge with two wood stoves and in-floor solar thermal heating, the common areas include a large dining area with seating for 20 and a small reclining area by the fire downstairs.
Meals are prepared with quality natural, organic and when possible, locally grown products. We can accommodate many diets such as vegetarian, vegan, no gluten, etc. Be sure to notify us in advance if your group has special dietary needs or allergies.
Beer, wine, and a limited selection of spirits are available for purchase at the hut. Spirits include bourbon, scotch, tequila, mezcal, vodka, absinthe, orange liquor, etc.
“OPUS hut is something to experience for all. Just the terrain surrounding the hut is something for all to behold. It was wonderful to wake up each morning and be surrounded by the beauty of the San Juan Mountains.”

“This Charming little hut was our home away from home for one night. The views were incredible. You can tell a lot of love and thought has been put in to the design and construction. Every window had a picture perfect view. The hutkeeper was a knowledgeable host with an extensive range of information about the area and hiking.”
